Michael Slager Released

Slager is the cop who shot and killed Walter Scott as he ran from his car following a traffic stop. Slager faces a murder charge as a result. The judge in the case set the trial date for October 31, 2016. Circuit Judge Newman, the same judge who denied Slager's request for bail in September, set bail at $500,000.00.

"It’s the first time Slager has seen the outside of a jail, a transport van or a courthouse since his arrest three days after shooting Scott in the back on April 4. A cellphone video of the shooting brought scrutiny to North Charleston of police officers’ use of force against black men. Slager is white; Scott is black.

At the heart of Circuit Judge Clifton Newman’s decision was an order from the state Supreme Court that cleared the area’s top prosecutor from going to trial on other cases before Emanuel AME Church shooting suspect Dylann Roof is tried this summer. The order is why, Newman said, he had to set Slager’s trial for Oct. 31.

Meanwhile, Slager’s pretrial confinement could affect a sort of punishment on the former officer even while he is presumed innocent, the judge said. A defense attorney cited Slager’s celiac disease that has worsened with a jail diet containing gluten"

Slager has been in jail for a year. What’s the holdup? It seems the video should be enough to get a conviction, along with the testimony of the guy taking the video. Makes me wonder if the case is weak.

I am not sure if the hold up. It is a cop. Things need to be right, not that they shouldn’t be right with everyone. I can’t imagine the case being weak. I thought there was even a fellow officer who testified he saw him place something at the scene.

The state Supreme Court cleared the area’s top prosecutor from going to trial on other cases before Emanuel AME Church shooting suspect Dylann Roof is tried this summer. I also have to wonder if she’s the only one who can do either trial. Near the bottom of the article, Slager’s attorney argues about the right to a speedy trial.
